CISCO - PERIOD 2 - Wednesday, September 19th

Cisco Students - Please respond to the following questions below:

1)
In your own words, explain the difference between the four types of OS installs. List any that you have personally installed (with or without difficulties).

2) Describe two preparations that must be completed before starting the installation.

3) In the Lab 2.3.3 Examining Operating System and Application Versions, complete question #1 a-f with answers that pertain to the computer you are currently sitting at.

IMPORTANT NOTES!!!!!!!!!! OJO!!!!!! (read below)

First - You may use the right hand list of posts to easily locate your class's daily posting. They are organized by date (most recent at the top) and then by period (in reverse order).

Second - When you are posting, I want you to sign you Student ID in a specific spot. Check out "BIOLOGY - PERIOD 4 - Monday, September 17th, 2007" so see an example and follow the directions below. This will be much easier for me to grade your responses. I no longer want to see "Anonymous said..." at the beginning of your posts. Also, I need your ID number, not seat number.... a seat # is relative and may change from day to day. Your ID # is unique to YOU and is what I need to ensure you receive a grade.

To sign your post:
Go to the bottom of the post, click "Other," and in the Name field enter your Student ID (mandatory). You may add your name; this is optional. YOU MUST ENTER STUDENT ID. For those of you who asked about creating another identity... and I said fine. Well, sorry, I changed my mind. I am requiring your ID # (for the present moment).

You may use this forum to ask me questions that you have during class and I will respond to you on this site as well.

PLEASE help the other students in the class or students who are not here today to submit their daily home learning assignments to this blog.

You may post ahead or you may post in class. Work posted after the end of the class period is LATE and may not be accepted.

REMEMBER, this is for course work purposes only. You are not to deface, demean, or dirty this blog site.

Thanks,

Ms. P

1) clean install deletes everything you had installed and creates new files with no upgrade. With an upgrade you stay with the same operating system and replace old files with new ones when an upgrade is possible. Multi-boot allows you to have more than one operating system installed, only one can be used at a time because it takes full control of the hardware. Visualization usually goes on servers allowing more than one copy of an operating system to be run in a single hardware creating many virtual machines.

2) one preperation is that you must verify that all hardware is certified to work with the operating system. also verify that all hardware meet or exceed published minimum requirements

3)c)version 5.1 and service pack 2
d) physical memory available to windows is 522,308 KB
e) memory is important to operating system because it stores temporary files used by applications and allows multiple applications to be runned on the computer without slowing it down. the more "RAM" you have the better.
f)you can legally only make one copy of windows but people tend to make more than one and resell them illegaly.

1) Clean install delets all the data on the partition where the OS is installed and needs to reinstalled.
An upgrade is when all the system configuration is preserved and it simply replaces the old OS wit the new OS
A multi-boot makes it possible for the desired OS to work on start up
Virtualization enables multiple copies of an OS to run on a sigle set of hardware. In addition creating lots of virtual machines
2) Make sure that all hardware is certified to work with the selected OS.
Make sure that the hardware meets or exceeds minimum requirments
3) i did the last part

1) well you have the multi-boot, the clean install, the up-grade, and the virtualization. the up-grade usually just installs extra components to your current OS. The clean install deletes the old OS and installs a new one. The multi-boot installs two different OS and lets you chose which one to boot when your start the pc. and the Virtualization lets you run multiple copies of the OS on a single set of hardware creating multiple virtual machines.

2)You need to prepare to install your OS by first finding out your needs for the pc and the cost of the OS.

3)1.c version 5.1 service pack 2 is installed on this computer.

1.d Physical memory available 231,100Kb

1.e An OS needs R.A.M to temporarily store information while the cpu processes it.

1.f you may make only 1 back up copy of the software.

1)Clean Install: Required when no OS exists on a computer or the computer can't boot the last OS anymore due to a problem.
-Installed
Upgrade: Replaces the files of the old, but same OS that was previously used with the addition of the new OS files.
-Installed
Multi-boot: Allows the user to store more than one OS on a single system and switch between them on boot-up screen.
Virtualization: Often used on large networks that are hooked up to servers; virtulaization allows all computers on a network to use the same OS as the main system/server. It creates duplicates of a single computer onto a whole network. Much like what we use at school! :)

2)-Verify that the hardware is compatible with the OS.
-View minimum system requirements and makes ure the computer meets them.

1)The four types of Os install are different, because each of them is used for a different aspect. For example, you need a "NTFS" so the new installation would be compatible to the system.Second, u need that your computer hold a bigger performance like enough Gb,volume, filename, or "HPFS".Also you need a program for the Linux system call "EXT2" and another for a extended file system "EXT3".

2)You need to delete the last program that you had in your computer and upgrade the computer.

Os comes in many ways

-upgrade-when you have a old version it do is to upgrade it to make it work even better

-mutiboot- is when many os can run at once

-virtualization- this is a more creative way to run an os it makes
it easier like 10 times better
totally!

-clean install- this is when you do not have a os so you basically
install a new one

1) THE DIFFERENCE IS THA CLEAN INSTALL IS DONE ON NEW COMPUTERS, UPGRADE REPLACES OLD OS FILES WITH NEW ONES,MULTI BOOT ALLOWS YOU TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE OS IN YOUR COMPUTER, AND VIRTUALIZATION ALLOWS MULTIPLE COPIES OF AN OS TO BE RUN ON A SINGLE HARDWARE.
2) TWO PREPARATIONS THAT MUST BE DONE IS TO VERIFY THAT ALL THE HARDWARE IS CERTIFIED TO WORK WITH THE SELECTED OS AND TO VERIFY THAT THE HARDWARE RESOURCES MEET OR EXCEED THE PUBLISHED MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.
3) C- VERSION 5.1
D-PHYSICAL MEMORY AVALAIBLA IS 261 100 KB
E-IT IS IMPORTANT TO SAVE AND LOAD DATA
F-ONLY ONE COPY

1) The main difference between a clean install and the rest of the OS install types is that it erases all the data within the current OS and essentially gives you a fresh OS install, like starting over.

An upgrade is different in the way that the data in the current OS isn't removed or changed, only the OS files are replaced with newer files.

A multi boot is different in that it gives one computer multiple Operating Systems, both of which carry their own files and act independently from each other, but only one can be used at a time.

Virtualization is different in that it allows multiple Operating Systems to operate at the same time, while using the same resources and hardware, thus creating multiple virtual machines.

2)You must complete a pre-installation checklist, which includes verifying that the hardware and hardware resources can support your OS, confirming you have the correct OS install medium, and making sure you have backed up important files and that the current data isn't corrupted.

You must also carefully decide on the partition structure you want for your OS installation.

3) a- check
b- check
c- Microsof Windows Version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254: Service Pack 2)
d- Physical memory available to Windows: 552,308 KB
e- Memory is important because it helps to store information quickly for temporary use, thereby allowing the computer to quickly access those files and run faster.
f- You can only make one copy.

When you buy a new computer and install a os it's called clean install. In a upgrade os you just replace the old os with the new one you downloaded. A multi boot os is when you have have more than one os on the same computer and both have their own components. Virtual os is when you have multiple os at the same time. I have never installed any os. Before starting the istallation you have to check the price of the program and the settingds associated with it.

1- Clean Install: Deletes all of your files.
Upgrade: Replaces or improves your files.
Multi boot: Makes it so you can install more than one OS on a computer.
Virtualization: It creates a virtual machine by allowing
multiple copies of an OS to be run on a single set of hardware.

2-First make sure that your hardware meets/exceeds the requirements. Then make sure your hardware works with your OS.

3-1(c)-version 5.1 service pack 2
2(d)-522,308 KB
3(e)- Memory is important cause it stores your files to your computer.
4 (f)- You can only make 1 single backup copy of Windows XP legally.
