BIOLOGY - PERIOD 7 - Thursday, September 20th

Please comment on the following (this was your Home Learning assignment which is due today):

Choose one of the 8 (eight) characteristics of life. In your opinion, explain how the tadpole expresses that characteristic.

Using 1 (one) complete sentence or more, state:
1) the characteristic you chose,
2) Why you selected this characteristic, and
3) How the tadpole expresses that characteristic.

Example:
The characteristic I chose was metamorphosis because I have been watching and drawing the tadpole during the past three classes. I have observed that it grows and develops, changing its body shape and size.

The characteristic I chose was metamorphosis because the life of a tadpole is similar to that of a caterpillar: the first start out as something but grow into something else.
Tadpole= Frog
Caterpillar= Butterfly

The characteristic I choose was "sexual and asexual reproduction". I select this characteristic because the tadpole is living and it reproduces. Tadpoles express this characteristic because its a tadpole now and it will later become a frog.

I CHOSE METAMORPHOSIS BECAUSE THE TADPOLES GET BIGGER EACH DAY.

Metamorphosis
i chose this because i could see how tadpoles go through development.
Tadpoles express this characteristics because they grow real fast, they start from tadpoles and end up being frogs. When they are tadpoles they are underwater, when they turn into frogs they breath air.

I chose metemorphosis because I can experience how tadpoles develop into frogs over time

The characteristic i chose is evolution. I chose this characteristic because tadpoles are groups and they change over time. Tadpoles express this characteristic because they are tadpoles then they turn into frogs.

the characteristic i chose was metamorphosis...The reason why I chose metamorphsis is because the life of a tagpole is similar to that of Lady bug........They both start off as eggs then they both go through many stages..than finally the tagpoles transform in to frogs and the larva eggs of the lady bug turns in to a lady bug

Students,

Do not feel stressed if your comments have been removed. They are not deleted. I can read them, but no one else will see them. I have deleted any that have cussing or relate to your opinions about the sub and the frustrations of this class.

I am interested in what you have to say, but I do not think it is necessary for everyone to read these comments.

Again, if you completed the assignment and included a reference to today's class, I may have deleted it from the posting. This will not delete your grade for doing the assignment. I can see your work, but no one else can.

Thank you for sharing openly all your thoughts. It often takes guts to tell the truth and to stand up for what it right.

I applaud all of you who today did your work.

I apologize that there were no handouts. I was not aware of this. The handouts will be there tomorrow (or for your next class on Monday).

Sincerely,

Ms. P

HI STUDENTS!!!

I have read your comments for today. Several of you seem very stressed at the moment.

No worries. I will understand if the sub has asked you not to use the computer. There may be an appropriate explanation for this.

I appreciate you letting me know.

Be patient. Remember you manners.

I would encourage you to search for direct yet verbally clean language to be used as you express your frustrations to me.

At no point what-so-ever should you treat a sub with disrespect or inappropriate behavior. This will only make the situation worse.

If you are unable to leave the room to get a drink and remove yourself from the stress so you can take a deep breath and calm down, then I suggest that you sit still, focus on a spot on the wall with your eyes open so no one will talk to you about sleeping, and focus on your breathing.

Take deep breaths until you calm down. It may take several minutes. That's ok. Better that then getting a referral written about you because you chose to be disruptive to the learning environment of the other students.

Please remember, using the computers, the lab equipment, and the specimens is a PRIVILEGE - not a right. If the sub says that you, personally, are not able to use the computer, then END OF DISCUSSION.

Whether or not you agree or disagree with the opinion and actions of the sub, as a student, you are expected to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS of the adult that is with you. And your privileges are lost through disobedience and disrespect.

Because I am not in the classroom, the power to decide if you can be on/off the computers resides with the sub - END OF DISCUSSION.

PLEASE listen and follow his/her directions (even if you are unhappy about it)...

Now, regarding the foul language posted during this class. This is completely disrespectful and inappropriate. I see that those if you who colorfully expressed yourselves are upset. I appreciate you voicing your frustrations. Now - I require you to express frustrations clearly without using profanities.

One suggestion is to practice the classic "I feel" statements. For example, "When you __________, I feel ______." Let me give you some examples that could have been used today:

A student to Ms. P: "When you are absent from school, I feel confused, disoriented, and stressed out."

A student to the sub: "When you tell me I can't use the computer, I feel upset, angry, mad, and frustrated. I also feel scared that I will not be able to turn in my assignment. This makes me feel anxious and worried."

A student to another student: "When you make a lot of noise and do not do your work, I feel distracted, irritated, and annoyed."

A student to another student: "When you snitch on me or give my name to Ms. Profenno, I feel embarrassed, guilty, ashamed, mad and angry."

A sub to a student: "When you are polite and follow directions, I feel relieved, grateful, and respected."

A sub to a student: "When you are loud, disrespectful, use inappropriate language and behavior, I feel angry, upset, disrespected, nervous, and fearful that something might get broken."

Ms. P to a student: "When you tell me about how students are acting in class, I feel informed, alerted, trusted, as well as embarrassed."

Ms. P to a student: "When you are loud and horseplay in the lab especially around the fish tank, I feel angry, upset, ignored, not respected, and embarrassed."

Please think about how you felt today in class. What is the situation that triggered those emotions. You can find an appropriate way to express your anger and frustration without getting yourself in trouble or creating a disturbance to the class.

Develop your skills of respect. I feel disappointed when my students are rude and chose to behave disrespectfully. When my students do not clean up the lab areas after they are finished, I feel upset, disappointed, and I feel like taking the privilege away from the class.

When I return we can talk more about how to still show respect when you don't like what is happening to you. Showing respect definitely does not mean that you agree with the other party. It simply means that you will treat them with kindness even if you disagree or become upset with the situation at hand.

Let this be a great practice class in learning self discipline in a stressful situation. IT IS NOT EASY TO BE RESPECTFUL WHEN ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED.... But, it sure is possible!!!!

I am not angry at any one person in the class. I am disappointed, however. I also feel embarrassed. I feel limited in what I am able to do with my classes when they are not able to follow directions and listen - It does not matter if these directions come from a sub or from me directly.

Let us use the class time more wisely on Monday. I will continue to be close within ear shot. I feel like giving this class a second try.

Please think about what you can and will do differently on Monday. Remember, NO ONE WILL CHOOSE FOR YOU!!! You choose how you think and act and behave. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for those actions. You are accountable for your behavior today. Each person in the class can choose to be a better student in next Monday's class.

:)
